I attempted earlier today to load Norton Systemworks 2002 only to use the windoctor and utilities sections of the program. However, during the process, it seems to have deleted my NAV 2004 at the same time. I have Norton Internet Security which was downloaded in February of this year and I remember it was a problem.
My firewall still is working ok , and I can get live updates, but I`m not sure whether I`m protected from viruses. If I look at the version of the NAV that I`ve got, it says 4.10.98 .
Also, when I reboot the computer, I get a message that says something like...Unable to locate configuration file for NAV. Then later as the desktop is being loaded, it says something like ...Before you install Norton Antivirus, you must remove the previous version. Would you like to remove the old version now? All that I have been doing is clicking on the upper right hand "X" and everything goes OK.
After all of this, I basically have 2 questions and depending on the answer you all give me , I`ll have one more.
1. Am I protected with NAV after doing live updates?
2. How do I get rid of the annoying message about unable to find congig files and the deletion of previous version of NAV?
As I`m writing this , I realize that there is bound to be some startled looks out there. I did have my hard drive upgraded last March and the tech put all programs into "olddata" and I think that is why I still have live updates from "4.10.98. That what concerns me regarding the protection issue.
Thanks a lot folks!
I`d be lost without you all...

Jay, i'm surprised that considering you posted this last Friday, no one has posted an answer yet... we usually have several members that like to yap yap... maybe they just missed it. At any rate, i'll take a stab at it.

The first issue you have is that you're attempting to use two different versions the 2002 and the 2004. That's fine as long as you install them to their own separate directories. The reason why you're getting these various error messages (i.e. "cannot find configuration files") is because one version is looking for files that the other version does not have.

What you SHOULD have done is kept the 2002 NAV - left it alone in the default directory. Then installed 2004 Norton systemworks to it's own separate directory. Now what you have to do is uninstall the 2004 NSW using the Uninstaller that came w/ the program.

And finally, as long as your live update tells you that your virus definitions have been updated, you're safe.

Lone Wolf;
I was kind of surprised that the reply took awhile as well. In fact I just checked if there was any replies because it seemed that no one was going to reply...Many thanks. It`s just that everything was going relatively well until a couple of weeks ago and then I got that Cydoor thing and suddenly I started to get pop-ups that I hadn`t got before. I also noticed that just above the system tray, depending on the site I go to , I get what looks like a "one way" sign over a picture of a disk and I can`t seem to get rid of it. BTW, these sites I`m talking about are legitimate sites which concerns me. Am I being watched? I have just downloaded "Spybot S&D" and have had "Adaware" for some time but neither one seems to help. After doing a virus scan , I noticed that it says I have "cd_clint.dll " and I was wondering if there is a simple program that is out there that I could get to get that out of there. I assume that it is somehow connected to Cydoor.
Thanks Again, and I appreciate you all being there!

What the heck is Cydoor? Is that a program you D/L and installed on your PC?? Never heard of it.

Although the two spyware remover tools are great to have, it's not a 100% failproof system. You need to use that in conjunction with a good AV like Norton -- which you are already using. In addition, I would recommend ZA (any version of ZA) as it's highly recommended in the security industry.

I would not be too worried about being watched as long as you're not conducting "Illegal" activities i.e. downloading kiddie porn... etc etc... However, it does raise a concern that you might have some sort of a trojan planted on your system. I've never heard of Cydoor and i don't know what that dll file refers to... but it wouldn't hurt to D/L a trojan remover tool... Google one up....Last I looked, I saw a couple that were still free.

I understand that cydoor is an online advertising company which for the most part seems to be legitimate but earlier on I guess they were bad news. I guess there are ways to manually delete the thing , but it involves playing around with the registry which kind of makes me a tad nervous. It also seems that you have to go into safe mode which I`m a little gun shy in doing. A couple of years ago , with my old P133 I went into safe mode and couldn`t get out!
The issue surrounding my NAV continues though...
In the system tray, I get a flashing live update icon that comes up every 5 minutes or so, but if I go to retrieve it (Virus Definitions) , it won`t finish without boxes showing up and the computer slows to a crawl while the icon comes up.
Below is a letter that I sent to Symantec tech support. I haven`t got their reply yet. It usually takes 24 hours or so. Let me know what you think. Keep in mind that it was my error that caused me to get 2 ddifferent copies of NAV. One is part of NIS 2004 and the problem one is from dissk Systemworks 2002. What would happen if I completely loaded the Systemworks and then deleted the whole thing from "Add/Remove Programs" . in the control panel?
Thanks again! Jay

About 2 weeks ago, I attempted to load from a cd that I had purchased
back in 2002,Norton Systemworks 2002 only to use the Windoctor and
Cleansweep sections. But somehow, it ended up (Partially I believe) the
Norton AV section of it in error. I had downloaded from the Symantec
Store a copy of NIS 2004 which of course has NAV as well as the
firewall. Since then I get a box upon boot-up saying that'It is unable
to locate the configuration File for NAV'. After pressing enter, it
shows another box saying that I must delete the previous version of NAV.
I click OK and the computer runs OK but I wondered at first if I was
protected from viruses. My firewall seems to be unaffected by my error
as I still have the firewall icon in my system tray. But yesterday, I
got a 'Live Update' icon in my system tray and when I click on it I get
the LU1821 message. I did what it said(closing applications etc.)but it
still didn`t update. Now I get 'LU 1823' saying that Live update is
already running!
or the Live update configuration window is open.
I`m wondering if I have no way to get live updates first of all and
secondly, if I delete my NIS 2004 that I got last February, am I
required to pay again? It seems like every 5 minutes now, I get that
flashing icon that says I have an available live update but I can`t
retrieve it. Very frustrating. I have followed all instruction regarding
going through the control panel and I get a box there too!
Yours Truly ...

If the software application does not come with an Uninstaller, then the correct way to uninstall it is to go through the control panel and use the "Add/Remove Programs". Most programs do not need to be removed in safe mode, so you don't need to worry about doing that.

Whatever that Cydoor is used for, it sounds like junk to me. Get rid of it, doesn't sound like it's serving any useful purpose anyway.

Cydoor

I wish it was in the Add/Remove programs list. Believe me, it is junk and there doesn`t seem to an easy way to get rid of it, The saga continues...stay tuned. Thanks for listening.

same prob

jay omg i had that exact same prob, what i did was had to take norton all the way off reboot and stick it back on.it happened 3 times to me and i have firewall/anti spyware programs ;o(

he4rts:
My problem sort of continues...the idea of scrapping Norton is probably going to happen due to the fact that I managed to get 2 anti-virus programs going (both Norton) at the same time. I had downloaded Norton Internet Security and after realizing that this damned Cydoor program was loaded, I attempted to load my old Systemworks 2002 and mistakenly ended up screwing up my anti-virus at the same time. Now I don`t have an anti-virus program running at all but my firewall operates just fine. I have contacted Symantec support, and because I get an information box with a message something like " NAV can`t find the configuration files" as well as another Symantect box furthur into the boot up process, they need me to take a screen shot , put it into the clipboard and send it off to them so that they can exactly what I`ve screwed up. The only problem is that this WIN 98 edition didn`t come with a clipboard program.
The beat goes on...
