I'm lost. I'm raged. And I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to kick that egyptian speaking HP rep in the throat.

Long story short: My gf got an HP laptop for college. Ever since, it's acted goofy. At one point we sent it back to HP, they crashed it, redid it, blah blah and sent it back.

Everything worked great until recently. She had no virus scan so I just got her AVG free edition to use. The thing is, AVG won't sense an internet connection to update. Yet, AIM, Mozilla, limewire, etc etc, is all running. The internet connection is live. The internet connection is working. But AVG refuses to find a connection to update.

I messed with what settings I was familiar with and came up with nothing.

I removed AVG, and reinstalled it.

I've also uninstalled the network adapter drivers, and restarted XP so XP auto-reinstalled them.

Nothing works. What else can I do?

If it's at her college, they might block whatever port avg uses to update (no idea why, but it's a possibility).

Otherwise it is probably the firewall. Check if you have a software one, or if not, make sure it's allowed in the windows firewall.
