I dunno if this is the right section, but oh well.

My site is getting spammed incredibly bad. Everyday I go on there and there's like five new threads to all these "FREE PORN SITES!!!" and all this crap.

Is there anything I can do about this? It's not guests either, somehow people are signing up and then spamming it. Do people just have absolutely no life, or is there a bot doing this?

On my sign-up page, there is a 6-digit image verification thing...aren't those supposed to prevent spammers?

Every user has a different IP, too, so banning them really has no effect.

What can I do?

Usually they are bots. The image verification system is supposed to prevent spamming, but you can never be 100% safe.
Banning the spammer's IP's would help a lot.

Welcome to our world. It ain't fun, and it ain't pretty.

Depending on which software you are using, you can make signing up tougher. My BF2 clan has locked down their site. Each person who wants to sign up has to be approved by the site's webmaster.

You have got to find a happy medium between total verifaction (which annoys real users , stops bots) or weak verifaction (is great for real users but easy for bots )

Like trotter said , it aint pretty ;)

Yea if it is a forums site you have being spammed the best option is email-verification system :(

I'm using Invision power Boards 2.1.7

I can't ban them because they sign up and make one post. Every post is by a different user, and completely different IP.

I'll try setting it to e-mail verification.

i recently visited a forum that has been setting up bot-traps. So far it has decreased their spam significantly, so you can try looking into that.

just as BTW, the site has 5 links for bot-traps and overloads the bots with fake e-mails, like a few thousand of them.

The idea of setting up restrictions on new accounts has been discussed here, with a user having to have a minimum post count before they can post links or images.

I found an email (@cashettes.com) being used like 50 times throughout users on my board. I just banned that email, should take care of a majority of it. lol

I couldn't figure out how to change the register verification system. If anyone knows how to do this with IPB 2.1.7 please let me know.
