i know of a few of these, major geek, ninite, file hippo, sourceforge, and cnet (download.com), but it has been a while since i have loaded up a computer. i had to do a system restore on my laptop, so i lost a lot of freeware and apps. which of these sites are considered safe? or is there a better site i have not listed? i know a while ago, cnet was not rated well. but things change. i did do a google search, and of course found just shy of 83 trillion , but without any kind of approval ratings.

I solely use majorgeeks.com. Those guys load and test everything before it is posted.

CNET / Download.com is pretty much garbage nowadays. SourceForge can be sketchy sometimes.

FOSSHub, FileHippo, MajorGeeks, Ninite, are all pretty good.

If you want to automate things a bit, Ninite and Chocolatey are good ways to do that to be able to setup automated install packages or scripts of your common applications.
