Dial-Up Cost?

then it looks like your phone company's gunna stick charges on you... didnt know they did that in other country's...

DSL here is 3mbs and 29.99 per month, you would be better off with that. You can tap into the phone line that you already have in your house plus when your on the internet, people can still use the phone.

Hmmm

How the cyber cafes used to manage in the year around 2000 when they too used dial up connections, its surprising.

Lets suppose that cyber café charge Rs.20 /hr.
Now there are 5 computers in that cyber café.
In a day-
They are probably open for 15 hrs during a day. If all the 5 PCs are occupied by customers for the complete fifteen hours, then the maximum profit gained by the owner is about Rs.1500.
In a month-
In a months time, assume that only for first 15 days the business is at its complete peak. Then profit gained in the first 15 days time- Rs.1500 * 15= Rs.22500. For the other remaining 15 days, assume that the business is gaining profit half of the maximum calculated for the former 15 days; i.e. customers used internet only for 7.5 hrs. a day.
Then profit gained for the latter 15 days time- Rs.1500/2 * 15= Rs.11250.

Total profit- first 15 days + latter 15 days = Rs.22500 + Rs.11250 = Rs.33750. Â…Â…(a)

Now if for internet, for a dial-up connection- the charges are
For every dial- up called, Rs.1.2 / 3 minutes and 0.8 service charge extra.
Then for 1 hour,
60/3 * Rs.1.2 + Rs.0.8 = Rs.24 + Rs.0.8 = Rs.24.8. Â…Â…..(x)
Then for 15 hours,
Rs.24.8 * 15 = Rs.372.
First 15 days,
Rs.372 * 15 = Rs.5580.
Latter 15 days,
Rs.372 * 7.5 = Rs.2790.
That equals to amt. = Rs.5580 + Rs.2790 = Rs.8370. Â…Â…Â….(1)
ISP charges = Rs.800 for 100 hours.
For first 15 days and for the latter 15 days,
The hours calculated,
15 hrs. * 15 + 7.5 hrs. * 15 = 225 + 112.5 = 337.5 hrs.
ISP charges for a month,
337.5 / 100 * 800 = Rs.2700. Â…Â…Â….(2)
Electricity and maintenance charges = Rs.4000 (assumed). Â…Â…Â….(3)

Total Expense = (1) + (2) +(3) = Rs.15070. Â…Â…Â….(b)

Real profit for the owner = (a) – (b) = Rs.18680.
That is really a huge profit margin gained by cyber café owners. Profitable business.
If that dial-up charges are made negligible, then
(a) – (2) – (3) = Rs.27050. Cool.

But can a single pc owner pay (1) charges?. Also the ISP (i.e. Rs.800) and electricity charges.
I limited my internet use to only for night surfing.(i.e. 8 hrs).
Charges calculated = 8 * Rs.24.8 = Rs.198.4. Â…Â…Â…( from (x) )
For 1 month = Rs.198.4 * 30 = Rs.5952.
Then why the ISPs are stating how much per hour internet surfing costs from their service anyway. I am paying the actual amount to the phone company only!.
