desktop background won't change

yes, it is my computer and I am the only person who uses it, my account shows that I have administrator rights

So, when you right-click the desktop, can you choose Properties? If you can, will it let you choose Desktop?

If you can get there, scroll through and choose a different desktop background. Click Apply, then OK.

I can right click on the desktop and choose properties, i can select desktop, but when I am at the desktop window that shows the options for different backgrounds, I cannot select any of the options or scroll throught, all of the buttons and the scroll menu are disabled and the only thing that I can change is the color, although when I do change it and hit apply or ok, there is no effect on my desktop

Check this link and they experienced the same problem. It is a virus worm and pretty bad as far as changing windows registry settings.
