I am thinking about starting my own webserver andI iwas wondcering if any of ya'll had any tips or tricks that you would share. Any websites that could help me out would be good. I am probably going to use SoL, Server optimized Linux, on a 400 mhz system with 512mb of ram. Is that enough? Thanks.

maybe the mhz is a little low... BUT depending on what you going to do with the server.. it should be fine.

using it for personal use... your fine.
using it for comercial or a business....out source it :)

not worth the trouble

good luck

Too low? Not really, there are some web-hosting firms running must less than that, hosting many sites reliably. 400mhz, especially a P2, should be plenty.

while u r maintaining a server, CPU/RAM wont count that much, but the Hard Drive efficency will definately be.

you put in 3000MHZ CPU + cheaper H/D = server failed. how much the CPU/RAM constitues in server responces? may be lesss than 10%

and if to see H/D's functionality = 100%

400MHz is good to go (uinles u r giving facility of database drives websites).

get very good hard drives (SCSI or S-ATA with good buffers/Spindle Rotation)
