How do I get the main website url to.....

How do I get the main website url to display the webpage I made? Right now it just displays the "parent directory". I uploaded the .html page I made in Notepad to my main "www.website.com" address with an ftp program. I called the webpage file I uploaded "index.html" but it still doesnt work
