Having Your own server

Ok Well , I have a secondary computer I dont use which isnt the best computer. But just for fun I want to set it up as a server. Since im going to be taking a web development class I thought why not use my crappy computer as a server to build my own website without paying for web hosting.


So now I need to know how to turn a PC into a server. Im thinking of having linux on it Fedora preferably or windows server 2003. Is it possible to use windows xp pro as an operating system for a server? Anyway I think my best bet is going with linux.

But after I have the OS installed ... whats next?

Setup apache/iis, mysql, php, perl, and ftp. Ubuntu server can set up all of that automatically for you: http://www.ubuntu.com/server

yes, you can also use XP as a webserver, I think i posted a tutorial here a few months ago, i'll see if i can dig it up

did I mention you can use appache on any os. just find the right version, but it exists. almost.
