I know sites that offer domain registration, but what is domain registration?

How would I become a domain registrar.

Is it easy? I've googled and googled and googled but have come up with nothing.

Perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms.

I'm trying to search "Become your own domain registrar"

I'm not getting anything.

Domain registration is basically getting your own domain. whatever.com .org .net .biz .xxx .us .ru .cn. .ca ...

To become a domain registrar you could open a reseller account with Enom https://www.enom.com/

what about DNS servers. What if I started my own Dns servers.

Would that work?

Hmmm.. after doing a bunch of googling i'm confused...

how do DNS servers differ from domain registration.

Is there anyway I could register my domains with myself for free?

Is there specific server programs or things that can help me with this?

I'm running debian + Dynamic ip

A DNS (Domain Name System) translates domain names into IP addresses.

It works like this:

You register a domain at enom.

You go to enom and change your name servers to this (for example)
ns1.yourserver.com
ns2.yourserver.com

After a few hours (the information needs to spread through internet), when you go to yourdomain-you-registered-with-enom.com, it will then refer to ns1.yourseverom (and ns2) for the ip address of the server you are trying to reach (when you type yourdomain-you-registered-with-enom.com)

There is no way you can just make your own free TOP LEVEL domain. A top level domain is yourname.com .org. net... You can get a .tk top level domain however if you go to http://www.dot.tk/en/index.html

You can also use a service such as no-ip http://www.no-ip.com/ and get a subdomain. (yourname.no-ip.com)

To add onto what Sevoma said about no-ip.com, theres also dyndns.org, and afraid.org. You will find hundreds of choices on afraid, but thats because users can point their domains there for others (and themselves) to use.

The only drawback for afraid is if you're using a domain, and the owner pulls it out of the afraid.org service, then you're stuck.
