Search engine I NEED HELP!!!!!

im doing this project on how do search engines work it is a one year lasting project and it counts 10% of the final mark. in it i must explain the different kinds of search engines that exist or have existed, explain how do a search engine work and so on.
I'm really lost, i don't even know where or how to start with and i dont know where i can get information; i mean i know theres wikipedia of course but i dont find it really reliable indeed.
So please if there is someone that know about the subject and who'd be able to help me even if it is just a little bit POST WHAT U KNOW. anything is helpful: books u know on the subject, web pages etc.
