The above post is correct. The person ranking for your name got there because there are more links pointing to his site on your name than your own.

Actually it is a little more complicated then that but in essence that's what is happening.

There are also elements of quality, freshness of the link, relation to your own site, and relevance that also impact whether the link is considered but essentially He With The Most Links Gets Top Ranking.

Google is built on link popularity. It rose to be the top engine because of its PageRank algorithm which calculates all those links into a factor that influences your ranking.

While optimized meta tags and content do help, as one poster suggested, you wil find that it's links that drive your rankings.

The nice thing is, with a little research you can outrank him.

Start by seeing who links to him. use this command:

link:his-site.com where "his-site" is the url of the other site. Google will display a list of links (probably a short list) that it determines are the most important. You can also use this query on Yahoo and MSN to see what links they have.

Then combine these lists and start submitting your site to them (if you can).
