link to secure network

how do link to a workplace network from the internet?
I wish to make a link from a webpage to an local network drive called W: this is obviously only available to users logged onto the network in the first place, anyone else will get an 'unavailable' notice, or something.
however, firefox doesn't understand 'W'. I'm sure I have managed to get past this hurdle before...anyone got any ideas?

There would need to be a webserver on the networked machine. And the root page would not have an index but would just be linked straight to the drive you wanted. If you can undertsand that. So the code for the link would be somewhat like:
Network
I'm not exactly sure on the password protection you want.
But yes in the config file for whatever webserver you wanted you would need to make the root folder something like your w:\.
