Corel Painter is really good, I use photoshop and painter for the things that I do.

(I love photoshop) but painter is defiantly a cheaper alternative..

wow, that looks very similar. the tools in the pallette are even in preety much the same order.

edit, i would have said PS elements. it can do all the basic stuff, and you don't really ever use the complex stuff in photoshop if you are not going to use it seriously, as you said.

I use FireWorks... Its not free, but nice.
Photoshop still is more powerful.. but I think FireWorls some time easier to use.

Pixel (http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=5) has a trial that you can try out too. It only costs 32 dollars now for the full version and you get updates up to 2.0. It is cheap now because it is still in development.

i think im gonna try gimp or pixel when it comes out, it said the trial versions are very buggy and unstable.
