Mac users beware! The latest update for Intuit's QuickBooks accounting software is apparently erasing important data and, for now, the only solution is to NOT install the update. Those of you that have installed it are hosed for the time being. Windows users are not affected.
If you did install the update, the company said, “our recommendation for now is to turn off your computer and do not use it further.” Intuit is trying to figure out how to help customers recover the data they lost, but this sounds like this is quickly spiraling into a nightmare for Intuit technical-support employees and QuickBooks users who didn't have a backup of their files saved to Desktop.

Intuit fixed that file-deleting-flaw in QuickBooks 2006 for Mac…wait… no they didn't. If you downloaded the patch on Monday, expect an updated patch sometime soon to completely fix the problem.

Users who apply the patch -- available for manual download since Monday and scheduled to be automatically downloaded to all machines running QuickBooks 2006 for Mac starting Thursday morning -- are still at risk if they run the accounting software while in range of a wireless hot spot, said Ian Vacin, offering leader for Intuit's Mac finance line, in a posting to the product's support forum Monday afternoon.
