Hey everyone,

So after I moved out on my own, I decided that it was (finally) time to get a laptop. So I've been shopping around, and really liked the Mac's powerbook. So I started looking more into it, but found out I could get a discount (I'm rather cheap, -.-'') on a Dell laptop. So, trapped between the two, I asked some friends for advice. They mostly pointed to the Dell, because they don't like Apple, but their arguments werenÂ’t really, well, good. So one of them suggested IBM, and said that even though they aren't focused on personal computers anymore, they had some pretty decent stuff. I haven't looked into it, but figured I'd ask around on some forums to see some pros and cons to both.

Some other random information:
-I already have the cds with software for the Mac
-I've been using a Mac for, well, a really long time, considering it is recommended for my java work and such.
-I have nothing against Windows; I've just never used it.

If you have any other suggestions, or could fill me in on some things you like/don't like about either, that'd be awesome!

Here's what I'm looking at:

Dell Link: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iXM140S4&s=dhs

Thanks!

That's actually hilarious because I was looking at the exact same models recently. I went with the Powerbook ... why? Because I am not a fan of Windows. As a long time windows user that switched, I must admit that Mac OS X takes the cake in all aspects.

It really depends on what OS you like better :) I would personally pay the extra to get a mac because OSX is much better than windows.

apple>dell. (duh).
Im definately gonna get me an apple lappy in a few years when i go to college. :).

You should definitely go with the Mac since you already have Mac software!
Even with the Dell discount, once you re-purchase Windows software you'll have totally used all of the money you saved, maybe even more. Also, Since you plan on using it for working, the Mac laptop will most assuredly allow for more productivity. Windows is much too intrusive for getting any work done.

werd. mac > dell

plus if you get the intel mac, word has it, you can install windows on it as well, with a boot loader, so if there is a program that your work forces you to use, you could use it even though you have an apple.

Apple is the only computer retailer that offers "core duo" or yonah processors, but by February Dell should have them too.

Apple is definetly they way to go, great video card, nice power plug technology, sweet dual core 1.83ghz CPU, comes standard with either 512mb or 1024mb of DDR2 667mhz. Don't think Dell can match that ...

There are many laptops, many of them which showcased at CES, with intel dual-core processors. LG, Toshiba, Acer are examples..
