i've heard that apple computers are difficult to customize and upgrade. but my instructor told me the Mac Pro desktop computer is very open to customization. you can throw on any regular ddr2 ram, put in an 8800gtx, hook up some old sata drives you have lying around. is this all true? then what limitations are there for the mac pro? hardware wise. and does it support sli?

I can't speak for the Mactels (Mac Pro, Mac Book, most models released since January, 2006), however, the PowerMacs, starting with the G3 family, are 90% "standards" compliant - they use off the shelf RAM, harddrives, and CD drives (albeit with special patches on the last) - the exception was the video card; it required a special firmware. So yes, you could get a Mac Pro, pop some more RAM in it, manually upgrade the harddrives, but I don't know about the videocard.
