When the iBook turns on it takes forever and a day then it will display a folder with a question mark over it...waiting a while long to get a symbol on the right site of the screen that appears to be a circular refresh symbol with a left arrow on the left hand side of the screen. Any ideas what happened to this thing?

Some sort of corruption.
I think you have to put in the install CD and hold R as it's booting up... if I remember correctly.
I only had to deal with that once after upgrading the RAM in my Mac Mini.
