Mac OS X only: Freeware program iTunes Remote Control lets you control the playback of iTunes on another computer on your network.
Say, for example, you're playing music on your desktop computer's killer speakers, but you're working from your laptop in another room. All of the sudden John Mayer comes on and you puke a little in your mouth (how did that get on your computer?). If you've got iTunes Remote Control on your laptop, and your desktop computer happens to be a Mac, you can quickly switch songs from the comfort of your laptop before shock sets in. Phew - disaster avoided.
Unfortunately iTunes Remote Control is Mac only (anyone know of a similar, cross-platform app?), but if you're feeling ambitious, you could also try controlling iTunes via your browser.
