iTunes deletes music off iPod?!

I am currently in the process of getting an iPod. I read that if you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes will delete any music off your iPod that is no longer in your collection on your PC. Is this function 'turn off-able'? Because I wanted to put all my music onto an iPod and then delete it off my hard drive. :amazed:

Well, if you're setting up the iPod with the computer in question, you can (when the iPod AND the computer are empty), right click the iPod icon on the left pane of iTunes, click settings or preferences (not sure which one it is), and then you can choose whether it automatically or manually syncs.

Well that's a relief! Wouldn't want it to go and delete a whole weeks worth of transfering in one go!
