Free Apps Install Spyware on Macs

Free malware with every download? Yup, there's an app for that.

Mac users downloading free screensavers and a video converter app from several popular download sites also got spyware that installs a back door, collects data, and sends encrypted information to remote servers, security company Intego said on Tuesday.

As Macs get more popular, spyware and viruses will be developed for them. Of course, Mac users will show their shining ignorance and claim otherwise.

TOLD.

This could become very, very scary. Microsoft has almost two decades worth of fixing security issues in Windows, and getting an infection now, you could say, solely comes down to user error. I was able to teach my family about safe computing practices and their problems have practically been eliminated. However, the Mac, with out this field experience, and with a belief among corporate and users that "Mac's don't get viruses" could very well lead to a repeat of the Windows situation in the late 90's-early 00's. We could see huge Mac botnets, a flourishing of adware, business crippled, mass identity theft, and so on, unless Jobs and Co. are extremely thorough in their prevention.

If the Mac doomsday does happen, then Microsoft sure as **** better work their butts off with Windows in order to capitalize on users fleeing the burning OSX promised land back into the Ballmer desert.
