XP Home box will not connect to internet

If the cable were bad it wouldn't work for the other computer. I switch it over to my computer to check and it works fine.

This is kind of an odd problem. theres not a chance that a proxy server has been configured in the machine is there? Also, just for S&G's try replacing the cable. I know you can use it on another machine, but humor me if you can...

how do your friend connect to the internet? dial up or broadband?

what repair were you doing for it? what firewall is he using?
