Mostly true but he aint the richest anymore the guy who started and owns IKEA is now officially the richest man in the world... i read it in the paper a few days ago... can't remember his name though!
As stated above the http portion stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Your browser, or most browsers are capable of handling many protocols such as ftp. Anything before the :// is a protocol hence http://.
To my knowledge the Internet has never completely crashed, however very large sections have crashed due to backbone failures.
