Wireless notebook to notebook connectivity

Is there any way to create a wireless connection between two laptops without the use of a wireless router?

I was logging off my laptop last night and it told me that another user was logged on. Noone else was logged on before me. Could someone log on through the router?

It could be. the WLAN connection between laptops without AP called ad-hoc. Set the WLAN setting to ad-hoc mode on one laptop(default is infrustructure mode) to permit other laptops connect to.
