how can i keep my neighbor from using my internet and loggin on my network, should i set the MAC addresses of the computers i want to allow or make it login?

To keep other people out of your network you can enable WEP encryption and disable SSID broadcast.

Hey igotyofire,

As mentioned you can disable the SSID broadcast but
this may stop your own computer from connecting in
some instances. Additionally you must configure
the DHCP to only as many computers as will be using
the router. Example 2 computers Ip Scope 192.168.1.100-
192.168.1.101.

Most important of all make sure you have changed the
admin password for the router from it's default setting.
As you mentioned you should Static DHCP the Mac addresses
of the computers using your router. You can get the
Mac Address of each NIC card by going to Start, Run, Cmd,
then typing ipconfig /all and look for the Physical Address
this is the MAC addresses.

Additionally if he continues to hack your wireless network
with something like AIRsnort then reduce the power output
on the wireless router to the minimum it takes for your computers
to connect. He will probably get bored and move on then.

Something I do on my Linksys wireless router. I have set static IP's for all of my computers that connect to the internet. Then I fleter all other IP's. The IP's are not the default 192.168.1.x series that comes up automatically for Linksys routers. I've blocked all MAC addresses except for my wireless cards on the router. I changed the SSID from the default, and don't broadcast it.

Basically, change everything from default to something that you know how to set, and you should be good to go.

Worked4me, even if you tell the router to not broadcast the SSID, it's usually fairly easy to tell the wireless adapter in your computer to look for that specific SSID.

Hey hilowe,

Thanks for correcting me I overlooked that. Truthfully
if you have some info on your network they can still get
your SSID even if it's been change and set NOT to broadcast
as described here.

They use Passive Sniffers, Airsnort, WEP Crack, and a few
more tools to access your network. Yeah they will need to
grab 1 to 2 million packets of info to crack the WEP but that's
about 3 or 4 hours of traffic on a company land. They can use a
yagi pringles or if you have the money buy a Telex

The reason a lot of regular home users don't go through this
level of effort is because of the time and money involved in
buying the Proxim ORINOCO PC Cards and wiring the card
to the antenna and loading Airsnort into your Linux PC.
