I need a wireless internet connection, but not thru a router. i want a unit that has a sending transmitter with an ethernet port, and then a reciever with an ethernet port that i can connect to a switch . Does anybody know what these are called?

I get what you mean, your trying to connect site A (house etc) to site B (garage / outhouse etc), what you need is two routers like the WRT54GL running openWRT and two Yagi antennas.

If you don't want to use 802.11* you'll have to look at something like a optical link but they can get expensive for anything other than low speed use, or if it's a fair distance away.

Pretty much, you'll need a wireless router (or bridge). Unless you're looking for an expensive setup. It won't necessarily be used as a router, but more of a bridge. Albeit, may be easier to use a wireless router with a built in switch (as most come with them nowadays), and then a wireless adapter.
