Wireless adapters

Hey guys, I am in the process of putting together a computer to order. The one thing that I still am not 100% sure about is the wireless adapter. Right now, the computer will be set up on the second story of a house. Sadly, the wireless router is in the basement.

I know that my brother a few years back bought a usb adapter and the signal from his room on the second story got 2-3 out of 5 bars of service.

I am looking on newegg and there are a lot to look at. I am looking for one that I can get full strength from the basement router. I know that there are the ones for 20$ on there that people say get good reception. But then they say that the router is 10 feet from them, which is not the case for me. Can anyone recommend one that I can get a good signal from a couple floors away that hopefully is not that expensive.
