Wireless is 1/3 of ethernet speed and fluctuates from fast to slow speeds.

My dad's computer gets roughly 23-24 mbps on ethernet while my main comp gets anything from 3-4 mbps to 8 to 17 (max and rarely too). I do all my speed testing at speedtest.net

Sometimes when the speed test is running the little white wheel shows the download progress goes to a turtle's pace. It'll take something like 5 seconds for the ping test to finish, yet it'll still show a low ping. Then the download test will take forever.

I thought this could've been a problem with the router seeing as I'm running dd-wrt on my linksys, but my laptop, which is some 5-6 years old, running ubuntu get 18-19 mbps constant.

I've got 4/5 bars signal.
Static IP (for port forwarding reasons)
Open DNS servers (I've tried my default ones and others.)

I've messed around with the MTU, beacon, preamble etc a bit as well as a few wireless settings in the router. I got a few small increments of speed increases, but that's about it.

So basically I've got 2 problems.

Speeds fluctuate and the bandwidth is considerably slower than my laptop.

Ping is almost always low and constant.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
blue
