Computer Management is a great tool for modifying users account, you can set passwords there, delete, disable and set information and groups. It might be that the buildin administrator account may have been rename, check in computer managment, you will see all listing of users that are created.

Also, when you file share with XP Pro, make sure you disable simple file sharing. It's located in folder option on the view tab then scroll already down. Right click the folder you want to share and select sharing and security. In the sharing tab select share this folder, enter a name if you have to. Then go to security tab, click add, a dialog box appear, click advanced, then click find now. Scroll and select "Everyone" click ok then ok again. Now you have added the "Everyone" group to the folder permission. Leave the default permission setting, this allow all user to read and copy the files, but they can not modify or delete it. Click apply and Ok to exit.

Go to control panel/administrative tools/local security policy. Open up local policies then select User right assignment. Search for the policy call "Access this computer from the network", double click on it, you should see the "Everyone" in there, if not you will have add it like in step1 if it's there leave everything alone. Now look for the policy call "Deny access to this computer from the network" make sure there is nothing listed there, double click on it and remove anything in there especially the "Everyone".

Disable any firewall/security program running until it's resolve.
