VPN advice needed

I just cant wrap my head around this VPN stuff, I have done quite a bit of reading on the subject before posting this, however I still have a few questions that I hope you all can answer for me before I start setting this up.

My primary goal for setting up this VPN is to use my network resources, (media files and such), from work without them knowing what I am doing.

I bring my own laptop to work and as long as their is no need for an SSID to get on the network I can just connect another ethernet cord to the back of the router or even directly to the modem. Like I said I just dont want em to know I am doing this.

So here are my questions....

When I complete the VPN will I be using my home IP to browse the internet, or will I still be going through the work IP?

How stable are VPN's? Is it worth the time?

you'll use your work ip. vpns are very stable.

any decent network admin will detect the additional bandwidth being used.
