how can they catch you if u use it? suppose u dont know where the connection is how could they find you, or do they know that u are usin the connection?

It all depends on the situation. When it comes down to it, it IS illegal it just matters how far the person you are leeching off of wants to take it. If someone sue's you or you get caught by comcast "scanners" you can expect at the very least a fine. It's very rare that someone will notice you on their network. If it's unencrypted chances are they aren't smart enough to notice you on there, unless your sucking up the bandwidth and they start to get curious, then get friends or comcast to check it out. Worse case scenario http://money.cnn.com/2005/07/07/technology/personaltech/wireless_arrest/

But, say you do get caught somehow (excluding sitting out in front of someone's house). If you atleast have some sort of defense you should get out ok as long as your nice about it all, and/or play dumb. It's not that big of a deal anyway unless you are hogging their network bandwidth, and then it really just comes down to personal morals. If you wanted you could just mask your computers identification info and they couldn't find out who you are without an extreme amount of effort.

Personally, I believe if you leech all their bandwidth by downloading things and then causing them problems then that is immoral. If you're simply browsing the net, doing the e-mail thing, etc... then obviously that doesn't affect them at all, and I don't believe to be immoral. Typically, a wireless connection has a 1.5mb connection and with you on there it won't make a difference. Unless, like I said, you are taking up alot bandwidth by doing multiple things.

I'm sure all of you speed atleast 1 mph over the speed limit, have looked at porn before you were 18, tresspassed on someones property, egged someones house (or tp'd), and half of us have smoked pot at one time or another... I can go on, but point is it's all the same in terms of legallity. Personally, I'm against smoking pot unless it's for medical use, and excessive speeding, but some believe otherwise just like those same people may be against wireless "Piggy Backing".

Without "hacking" into someones computer that's on your network, there really isn't a way to know who is doing it unless they are sitting right outside your house with a wireless device and you SEE them. Your "Computer Name" is shown on the "Attached Devices" tab in the router settings but all you have to do is change the name if it relates to anything about you. Also, you have an ip that identifies your location, but that will just show their address if anyone tries to trace it. There's also a unique mac address that identifies your device your using but without alot of effort there isn't a way of actually identifieng that person. But, like I said, there's no way without accessing that persons computer and getting some sort of evidence of who they are. Then, you've just broken that same law yourself :)

I got a mother f'er leeching off my unsecured wireless...i wont sue if i find them, ill just leech off something of theirs :), yes i know how to lock it down....but the main computer wont let me go to the settings page for some odd reason...so im stuck with some random neighbor leeching my sh**....at least i know when they are doing it so i can just reset the router and cut them off.

So no its not okay u cheap ******* (talking to ur "friend") ;) Now if I was the cheap ******* on the other end, then I might think it was okay, i wont lie.

wtf voted yes?

it's ILLEGAL!

anyone who votes yes is not thinking. Kind of like asking a pot head if it's OK for you to smoke weed. what kind of answer do you expect?

I voted yes.

Its ISPs giving out wireless routers to familys who dont no how to secure them. My ISP had a guy come around to install it and he didnt setup any security just left. I had to do it my self and I can detect 3 other wireless networks in my area unprotected your average person hasnt got a clue how to set it up.

Hey mine is protected I can't even access it. LOL get connection can't get on the internet.

in my opinion if it's unsecured wifi then you connect to it, i think that's fine you didn't hack any password or somethin' it's the wifi owner's fault he/she did not put encryption on it...
