So, I am looking for a switch or maybe a hub I can add to my router so that I can plug my hard drive into it and connect it to the network.

The thing is I have never done this before I so am unsure how secure I can make the hard drive (I am not worried about roommates, but I do want a password on the router so that only those with access can get onto it, which I could solve by using Truecrypt, but I don't know how they will act over a network).

Does anyone have experience doing this and know what type of hardware I would purchase to make the router networkable? It only has a USB port at the moment, and from my random google searches I know that USB switch just keeps bringing up KVM switches...

So, ideas/advice/info anyone?

Thanks in advance!

You want a router, not a USB Switch. Some routers have a USB port on it where you can do just that.

Within a router, you can set the hard drive as a password, or only your IP number can access it.
