I have a wireless Netgear router, WNR3500, and I want to turn off all its extra features and just make it into a simple, no-fuss switch.

I plan on replacing it with a router that I will be building on my own (supposedly better than most "mainstream" routers and a lot more control over functionality). This requires taking an underpower computer and dedicating it as a router with some router OS installed. However, this will need to connect to a switch so that my network can get access.

Sooooo...how do I drop this router down to size and make it a slave?

I've read a few things and they all seem different. Some say turn of the DHCP broadcasting, another said to turn off the firewall and open all ports, and of course there's the firmware replacement.

Turn off dhcp and give it an IP on your subnet, if your gateway is 192.168.1.1, make it say 192.168.1.2. Then bypass the wan port on the router and plug the network into one of the lan ports.

Thanks, man. I appreciate it. I was beginning to wonder if anyone at this forum knew. xD

Btw, love your signature. IT Crowd is the bomb diggity.
