trying to send/receive file with telnet/hyperterm

I been trying to use a telnet(client) friends comp) to hyperterm(server) my comp) connection with a friend to see if i can send/receive files, knowing nothing of terminal commands or how to use it, is making this painfully hard

i'm able to make a connection but only able to send letters
when i type a command like "sen" it just sends the letters "sen" to the other computer, how do i get a command to run, and am i able to do this with telnet and hypertrem

when i try to use the "send file button" on hyperterm it just sends the letters and #'s to the other comp and does nothing, like it doesn't know its a command

i believe both are using ANSI emulation

i can not find any info on the web on how to do this, please help!

setup an ftp on the host, use telnet to connect
