transferrinf iles from a windows 98 se pc to a window xp laptop

I have recently bought a newwindows xp laptop and I want to transfer some music and word files from a very old windows 98 se pc onto it. I have bought a crossover patch cable. The newer comp asked me questions about transer wizards etc, and i got really confused. can anyone give me an idiots guide as to how i can do this. i really have little experience and any help would be very gratefully received
