Text encoded message

Hello,

what is a text encoded message, how does a receiving terminal know that it is receiving a text encoded message?

prolly a data transmission from one application to another. the terminal prolly has an open port listening for connections. the sending application prolly requests a connection to the terminal and starts to send a binary stream encoded in ASCII.

of course this is all theory. could you provide more details such as what type of systems you are working with and the application its using?
