Snooping Father in Law

i have reason to believe that my girlfriend's dad is somehow monitoring all the traffic on his WiFi. He's hardwired to the router, and there's 2 or 3 devices in the house connected wirelessly. He's pretty tech savvy, and snoopy so i wouldn't put it past him.
I was thinking about getting a VPN in order to keep his nose out of my business, but the thought occurred to me that all the information still has to go through his router right? so even if i got a VPN would this even help?

As far as I know an encrypted VPN should stop him from being able to see your information.

yeah the data will go through the router but it will just be jumbled hex code and smiley faces.

Yes, using a VPN means that even though your connection is going through his router, it will appear to him to be meaningless strings of garbled mess.
