Slow Wireless Ic

Please can someone just help me I am really annoyed right now.

I have a small wireless network that has a laptop and one computer, and I have heard that when both people are on the network you shouldnt really notice any slow down in speed but this isnt the case for me.
When I am the only one on the network my download speeds are ok (about 100KB/sec) but as soon as my brother goes on I am getting speeds of 12KB/sec. Whats going on..is their any way I can speed it up.
I have tried updating the firmware but nothing.
ANY HELP WILL DO PLEASE I AM REALLY STRESSED BY THIS THANKS

my ISP is AOL

Update your wireless adapter drivers.

I have already done that for my adapter and for my router but it doesnt seem to improve the speed.
Any more tips anyone please

Do you both have dismal speeds or just you? How is the signal strength?

The signal strength is excellent im only 5metres away from the router, we do have dismal speeds when we are both on at the same time, but the main PC that is directly connected to the router gets great speeds all the time.

Well, aparently there's a conflict with the information passage from the router to computer, and router to laptop.. I'm pretty sure it's got to be the firmware/software etc..
