Mike, from the sounds of it, you are just trying to get through the initial configuartion on each device, (the 2600 routers, and the 2900 switches). If this is still the case, and you are trying to access the devices for the first time, it sounds like you aren't connecting to them properly.
For a first time config, you will need to connect to each device individually to get a basic config going, and enable telnet access. Connect a DB9 rollover cable from the Serial port on your PC to the CONSOLE port on the router. As you mentioned you have a PC WITH and one WITHOUT a Serial port. You can also use a USB to SERIAL adaptor. Plug it into the USB port, then connect the Cisco Rollover console cable to that.
