I couldn't really explain anyway, I had an embarrasing amount of help from the teacher :p

Whaaa? There are rules on these forums? :p

Anyway I'm going to stay on topic now.

^No rules. Welcome to Thunderdome!

I have never had any benefits using school networks... in high school, it was very very strict internet prowling.

As others have said, schools are extremely strict because one wrong website can comprimise the security of their entire network (think not only about the dorms network, but professors, research departments - a lot of data that is important at risk). So they have to really 'lock down' the network to ensure some idiot doesn't download something that would comprimise that security and destroy that network.

Ask anyone in a large network environment, if you get one really bad worm it can take months to isolate it and remove it because of the amount of computers and servers. My work has been dealing with the same type of worm for a few months now because we are so large.
