RJ-45 Telephone Wiring

He was saying that the way I wanted to run multiple lines wouldn't work. It had nothing to do with just running one line at a time. I'm trying to run four to every jack. :)

That was pretty much it. Plus i do know a thing about phone lines i was thinking more internally that the wires would not be compatable. Just cause they are tiwsted pair doesnt mean that they would work. The voltages could be wrong or the Cat cable might not be able to handle the power sent thru the phone lines.

Gotta remember when the power goes out a corded land line phone still has power. That was one of my concerns with the Cat cable.

Yea, it'll work alright. The "typical" phone line in a home in the US built in/after a certain year follows the same eia/tia stranded standards that Cat5-5e-6 use today. It'll only run up to certain speed and not be on a frequency suitable for strong, reliable (over a long period) ... but yea, it'll most certainly work. a stranded copper wire is a stranded copper wire (as they say) <---- I don't know who "they" is :) When CAT5 first came out, a lot of folks that I worked with ignored it... CAT3 was cheaper, just as reliable (at the time) and there really wasn't a "need" to get up to 100Mbit because there were less than 3% of the total cards that existed in all computers on a given network.

Thanks Doc. If you dont mind me calling you that?

That expalins it better to me.

Doc? LOL, if only there was such a thing. *sigh* I love it though. I see other folks on here calling you Mak, so I suppose that I should follow suit. I keep forgetting the 3 digit string of numbers after your name and have to scroll up. :)

Yea, it's actually kinda cool what I've seen some people do with older technology to make it work.

This probably shouldn't go too far, but I was at a job site once (MDF of a company HQ) and witnessed a guy (not even close to joking) try to satisfy an upset casino owner.

Owner: Well, we have GB cards on the back end so, this is what I wanted... a FULL GB backend!!! (He was ****ed)

The Technician: Ok, we'll get it done. (even though it was NEVER in a statement of work, NOR did he pay for it)

The server stated "Connected @ 100MB"
So, the technician stripped the existing CAT5 patch cable from its coating and removed the orange/orange-white, and the green/green-white copper wires.... replaces them, twists them together in more twists per foot and then covers it back up, cuts a small piece off and re-crimps it. When he reconnected it, it showed 1.0 GB :) LOL I was COMPLETELY floored. I said, now, will it actually be capable? He said, "No, not at all actually" LOL. I called him a show off and then pulled out a solid 5e that I had in my bag at the time, threw his cable away and then plugged mine in. I've never seen someone do that before though to trick the OS on it's capable throughput.
The guy was a telephone technician for like 40 years or something like that... LOL

I go by Mak or whatever. I leave it up to the people's choice. Mak is just fine by me. I know my name can cause confusion. I just think it is easier to have nicknames. Maybe cause i am lazy and didnt want to type out Dr. IP and figured Doc would be sufficent.

Cool story. I will most certainly bookmark this thread as it holds a lot of interest for me.
