Really slow FTP download speed

upload maxes my connection out, but my download speed is miserable, like below 30kB
HTTP can max out connection also

max speeds:
FTP upload - 250KB
FTP download - 30KB
HTTP download - 1.6MB

how and where do I start at to diagnose this?

Hi. A few Qs:

What type of Internet connection do you have, and what speed?
What FTP servers are you downloading from, and does the same occur with other FTP servers?
What FTP client are you using?
Is your reported HTTP speed from an online Internet speed checker?
Are you sure that your download speeds aren't attributable to throttling at the server end?

rated 12 Mb down and 2 Mb up according to my ISP

FTP server-
according to my provider, the FTP server is from OVH in France

client-
I tried using both FireFTP (an add-on for Fire Fox) and FileZilla

reported HTTP speed is from actual downloads- the fastest I've seen

I am not sure about the thorttling...

but my server provider has provided me an FTP proxy( I have no clue what this is), and it works
speeds reach 800+ KB

so issue solved.

the only reason I brought this up is, i had another provider previously.
and I get the same miserable download speeds
that leads to me thinking its something wrong on my end

the previous provider, did not respond to my support ticket for over a month
obviously I quit using them, and switched to this provider
25% less storage but, quick and excellent customer service, makes me a very happy customer

An FTP proxy simply means all your FTP requests will be routed to a different server than all your regular traffic.
Probably been done because of the final location of the FTP server (e.g. more efficient route is configured through their proxy)

Could be that some one is limiting your FTP traffic. In the past, I have been able to access the same file from both FTP and HTTP, and the FTP access is slower.

It also comes down to what type of FTP have been accessing and how much traffic is going in and out of that FTP.

I've tried SFTP, FTP (passive, active)
