Hi all,

Been reading lots on DIY Wireless Netwrok ANtennae construction.. and i love the Coffee can antennae!

What i need to do is share my internet connection with a friend in the neighborhood.. he's about 200 meters away from me..

I plan to make my own coffee Cantena so that i can transmit to him..

that said, before i start I would like to know if:

1) DYI Antenna can boost signals of WIRELESS ROUTERS? or just NICs? - seems that all these DIY Antennae websites refer to wireless nics all the time..

2) How good does it penetrate walls? - i have a good feeling that a DIY antenna pointed to his house can do the job for us.... but only one problem.. there's a freaking house right in the middle blocking the point of site from my roof to his roof..

Those DIY "can"tennas are good for omnidirectional usage. Since your buddy is 300meters (or around 1000ft). Your going to want a directional antenna pointing directly to one that he has setup at his house.

really? why most DIY antennaes i've found are actually made as directional antenna.. specially the CANtennas..

are you sure you got your infos right?

They are not as good as a directional professional built antenna. The signal is not as concentrated as a directional one. Also you might have to go thru that house that is blocking your line of sight. So you are going to need something that is more efficent than that cantenna.

And yes i got my "infos" right.

EDIT: are you sure that you have your "infos" right? None of the articles say anything about a cantenna replacing a directional antenna.

nope.. didnt say it's a replacement.. just that according to my research, most cantennas are meant to be DIRECTIONAL antennaes..

thanks anyway

soo.. any advice on this?

Like uzi's saying, a home built cantenna is not going to be as efficient as a professionally built one.

To go through thte house, you will have to have an antenna on your end, directing the signal at your friend, and he will probably have to have a pretty good antenna on his end to receive the signal.

Just an FYI you usually have to have line of sight to get wireless to work. You can try it, but IMO, going through a house with home built antennas, I really doubt that it will work.
