Hi Guys ...

Just a quick Question...

Is there a way to pull the proxy setting of the network , if they are not detected via autodect ?

Dmon:confused:

You can set it up to run in a login script. The setting is in a registry key on the machine. Also, you can send out group policy to do it too.

user setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\\ProxyServer
machine setting:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\\ProxyServer

Group policy:
open Gpedit.msc
expand User configuration->Windows Settings->Internet Explorer Maintanence->Conection-.Proxy settings.
If you send this out to the domain, it's applied when the machine logs on.

Im pretty sure that would auto populate the proxy server settings in IE or the hosts file... Am i wrong ? Our gpo sets the proxies on login, but its viewable in the internet options. always visible just incase it needs to be modified.

We don't use the hosts file. The settings in IE are stored in the registry keys above. If you don't populate them, and only use the GPO, then they are set for you, but are only in the user profile for the regiistry settings. If you enable the proxy settings to be machine specific, then they get set in the hklm settings.

does that make sense? GPO's are always confusing.

DNS handles the IP/name resolution. not the hosts file. You shouldn't need a hosts file if DNS is working.
