Proxy Server?

I'm looking to connect my computer to a proxy server does anyone know a website that lists proxy servers that actually work?

So I can protect myself by shielding my ip address

That'll only sheild you to a certain extent. If someone wanted to they could still find out your IP.
Sometimes you get really paranoid people who go through a few proxies, spoof their mac address, disable nearly everything, etc.
Truth be told, that will make it harder for someone to find you, but it definitely won't be impossible.

Exactly correct, as Souphire stated. Depending on what you want the proxy for, it will shield you to some extent, but you wouldn't be completely shielded. And also as he said, some people will spoof MAC addresses, but even that isn't completely fool-proof all the time either.

Not to mention the fact that many proxies are known and ip blocked.
