Problem with Wireless Speed

I have a 54 Mbps SMC wireless router with two identical IBM laptops receiving signals from the router. There was no encryption on the router for the last 6 months, but I set WPA encryption on it earlier today, cause people were leeching off it. After doing this, and getting the two computers accessing the router again, I noticed that one laptop's wireless speed was still 54 Mbps, but the other one was now 12 Mbps. Any idea why this happened? Again, both laptops are identical in every way in terms of hardware and programs installed. Thanks for any help!

are the signal strengths of the laptops similar??

Signal strengths are showing as excellent on both laptops...

The problem has resolved itself on its own... both are receiving at 54 Mbps. Thanks.
