PPoe internet disconnects often

Hi, I'm connected to an ADSL2+ PPOE connection, through a router. Every once in a while, my internet will disconnect, and I'll have to reboot my modem and unplug my router for a minute to get it to reconnect. We can sometimes go a whole week without this happening, at other times, it'll happen multiple times in one day. I've noticed that I can get it to disconnect without fail if I download torrents, without placing any limit on the download rate. It wasn't always like this with this provider.

I don't know if its the provider that's the problem, or my router. I'm using a D-Link 601, but I've also tried a D-link 615. I've updated both of their firmwares to the latest versions.

Any ideas?

Plug directly into the modem and bypass the router and see if it still happens.

I know this would happen on my older routers because they simply weren't powerful enough and didn't have enough RAM on them, and would work for a while after rebooting the router.
