Please help identify this inline filter on my Cable modem!

I was doing some re-wiring of my parent house and found this filter on the modem line. It was in the basement and also at the splitter before the modem. The cable that is isn the house is RG-59. We re-ran RG-6 and took the filter off as well as the splitter. The stamping on the adapter/filter is "SHP3-50 244". The same filter was on both sides. Anyone know what it moght be for? There is a likng below to the pic.

This thing filters the cable tv signal out. You will need to put it back on to prevent connection problems.
 
When I re-installed them, my connections keeps timing out. I thikn I'll leave them off unless someone can tell me a reasopne not to.
