Ping works but networked apps won't

There are two apps on seperate servers. One app polls the other every minute, even when idle, to ensure the connectivity is still there. Every ten minutes the polling app reports a disconnect and after another 10 it reports the link is up again, only to go down again. A ping between the two boxes always works.

In fact when a continuos ping is left running from the box hosting the polling app the disconnection errors disappear.

Has anyone got any idea why this is happening please?

you should prolly analyze the network traffic between the two machines with Ethereal
