hey guys i have a laptop and a desktop connected together . they networked fine for about three months . now they dont show up together. and when i try repair the connectino on the one pc it says unable to require a fresh ip. both pcs are running windows xp and both are set to auto dectect ip settings. any idea`s?

are they directly connected? or are you connecting them with a gateway/router? or a hub/switch?

id guess that you're not using a gateway/router and that's why you're having these problems. You'll need to manually set addresses and then you should use ping to check connectivity.

If that doesm't work, make sure that you are using a crossover network cable
Rather than RJ-45 patch cables

(I think they are called RJ-45, otherwise strasight patch cable)

RJ-45 is the Connector on the End

Typicially the Cables are refered to Cat X Network cable
where X is, is the Category of the Cable Most commonly Cat 5( and Cat 6?)

if you directly Connecting 2 computers together, make sure you are using a Crossover cable

you may want to try setting up the computers to use static IPs
make sure you set the netmasks the same if you intend to use native file sharing using Hostnames, and you will have to set up a DNS address if you intend to be able to go online properly

(im assuming that your using windows)

you will need to use static IPs if doing a crossover network
Also, make sure you have setup the network using ("setup network" in control pannel)
